CHAPTER SUMMARY

This chapter discussed criminal and tort law issues in cyberspace. As part of the discussion, criminal and civil procedure rules were reviewed. Criminal and civil procedure refers to court processes used to conduct trials. Criminal procedure is the process governments use to hold criminals responsible for their actions. Civil procedure is the process individuals use to settle disputes with others.

The chapter also discussed substantive criminal and tort laws applicable to online activities. There are many federal laws that governments can use to help prevent and punish cybercrime. Individuals also can use traditional tort law concepts to seek redress for harm that they experience on the internet.
