Here’s a great way to repurpose your old beater
deck into a swing that’s tons of fun and just
looks cool. I saw one at a beach campground
near Santa Barbara, California, and immediately
decided to make one for my kids. They sell new
for $50 to $100 but you can quickly make your
own for a few bucks’ worth of rope!
1. DRILL
Put a hole in each corner of the deck just where it
starts to bend up for the nose and tail, 1" from the
outside edge. Then drill a hole through each end
of the dowels, 1" from the edge as well. (Keep the
dowel holes aligned as best you can.)
2. KNOT
Cut two ropes to size, then poke each end down
through the holes in the deck. Tie a big fat knot
into each underneath the deck. Tie another
knot into each rope about 30" above, then slide
through the dowel handles to keep them sideways
over the deck. Tie another knot above each to
hold the handles in place.
3. HANG
Loop your rope over a tree branch or through
your hanging hardware. Hoist the deck to the
level you want. Lock in place with an appropriate
knot or clip.
You’re ready to ride! Be sure to use a branch
or beam that’s of suitable size and strength.
To protect a tree branch from being girdled
(strangled) by the rope, use short, loose slings
made of wide nylon straps or webbing (like
car seat belts). Put a carabiner at the apex of
your rope, then tighten a U-bolt beneath the
biner so your rope’s length stays even on both
sides forever.
