Thanks to my supervisor, Cornelia Müller, for opening me up to figurative thinking many years ago and for giving me the opportunity to investigate it in its lived contexts of use. Ever since the beginning of our joint collaboration, she has inspired and excited my curiosity about “experiencing and understanding something in terms of something else”. Her invaluable feedback, motivation, and support kept me following my PhD journey.

I would also like to thank Hermann Kappelhoff for influencing my view on audiovisual media and making me think about metaphor and metonymy in a transdisciplinary manner.

I am indebted to my colleagues at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, Franziska Boll, Janett Haid, Lena Hotze, and Silva H. Ladewig, for their constant encouragement and invaluable support.

Furthermore, I want to thank Amber Shields for proofreading and polishing the English throughout the book, and Eileen Rositzka, Thomas Scherer, and Christina Schmitt for being always helpful companions I could rely on.

Kaspar Aebi, Lars Dolkemeyer, and Janine Schleicher deserve acknowledgement for their assistance in preparing the manuscript for publication.

My deepest gratitude goes to my husband, my parents, and my friends for their loving guidance and understanding over the past years.
