In Brief

  • Smart Device Extensions is a part of Visual Studio 7.1 that lets developers target the .NET Compact Framework for PocketPC and Windows CE devices.

  • Creating and deploying applications for PocketPC devices is very easy and usually works “out of the box.” However, deploying and debugging applications on Windows CE devices can be more challenging.

  • Conman is the connectivity technology by which Smart Device Extensions communicates with devices. Understanding Conman makes it possible to effectively troubleshoot connectivity issues.

  • CPU Picker lets users dictate to Conman exactly which CPU architecture their device uses, which can solve problems caused when Conman cannot correctly determine the architecture for itself.

  • The Smart Device Authentication Utility lets developers set up the security infrastructure needed to make Conman connections to devices. This utility makes it possible to set up such an infrastructure on devices that do not support ActiveSync.

  • If Conman cannot be set up successfully, then it is still possible to install the .NET Compact Framework manually.
