Setting a Different Currency

The currency used in Project 2010 is the one specified in your computer system’s regional and language options. However, you can set up your project to work with a different currency, or even to work with multiple currencies in a single plan. These capabilities facilitate cost planning and management for projects that span multiple countries and their currencies.

Setting Up a Different Currency on Your Computer

You can set up a different currency to take effect in all the applications you use on your computer by changing your computer’s regional and language options. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, Control Panel.

  2. Click Clock, Language, and Region.

  3. Under Region And Language, click Change The Date, Time, Or Number Format. Be sure that the Formats tab is displayed in the Region And Language dialog box that appears.

  4. In the Current Format box, click the language and country pairing whose currency you want to use throughout your computer system.

The formats for date and time for the selected language and country pairing are displayed.

  5. Click the Additional Settings button to open the Customize Format dialog box.

  6. Click the Currency tab, and check that the currency is displayed the way you want.

  7. Click OK in the Customize Format dialog box and again in the Region And Language dialog box.

If you change the country and associated currency, the new setting takes effect for any new projects that you create from this point forward. It does not change the currency settings for existing projects.

Setting Up a Different Currency in Project 2010

If you prefer, you can change the currency settings just in Project 2010 and not for your computer system. Currencies are set for individual plans, not for Project 2010 globally. To apply a new currency in the current project:

  1. In Project 2010, open the project in which you want to use a different currency.

  2. On the File tab, click Options, and then click Display in the left pane.

  3. Under Currency Options For This Project, in the Currency box, select the currency you want to use, as shown in Figure 9-26. You need to know the standard currency abbreviation—for example, GBP for British pounds, EUR for Euros, or USD for American dollars.

The contents of the Symbol, Placement, and Decimal Digits boxes change to reflect the currency you choose.

  4. Make any necessary changes to the Placement or Decimal Digits box, and then click OK.

Any currencies already entered in the project are changed to the new currency. Note, however, that values are not converted; only the currency symbol is changed.

Use the Display section in the Project Options dialog box to specify the currency you want to use in this project plan.

Using this method, one currency applies throughout the project plan. If you consolidate projects that use different currencies, be sure to change the settings in each one to a common currency and make the necessary conversions to cost values. Although you can specify different currencies in different projects, only one currency can be in effect for any particular project.
