Using the Book’s CD-ROM

The CD-ROM inside the back cover of this book contains all the practice files you’ll use as you work through the exercises in this book. By using practice files, you won’t waste time creating samples files and folders—instead, you can jump right in and concentrate on learning how to use Microsoft Windows XP.

Important

The CD-ROM for this book does not contain the Windows XP operating system. You should purchase and install that operating system before using this book.

Minimum System Requirements

To use this book, your computer should meet the following requirements:

Hard disk space requirements will vary depending on configuration; custom installation choices might require more or less hard disk space.

245 MB of available hard disk space with 115 MB on the hard disk where the operating system is installed. The practice files needed to work through the exercises in this book require 15 MB of available space.

Important

This book includes instructions for installing Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. The Service Pack 2 installation process requires up to 1700 MB of available hard disk space.

Installing the Practice Files

You must install the practice files on your hard disk before you can use them in the chapters’ exercises. Follow these steps to prepare the CD’s files for your use:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

    An End User License Agreement appears. Follow the on-screen directions. It is necessary to accept the terms of the license agreement to use the practice files. After you accept the license agreement, a menu screen appears.

    Important

    If the menu screen does not appear, start Windows Explorer. In the left pane, locate the icon for your CD-ROM drive, and click this icon. In the right pane, double-click the StartCD executable file.

  2. Click Install Practice Files.

  3. Click Next on the first screen, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next.

  4. Click Next and then click Install.

  5. After the practice files have been installed, click Finish.

    Within the installation folder are subfolders for each chapter in the book, as indicated in "Using the Practice Files."

  6. Close the CD window, remove the CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive, and return it to the envelope at the back of the book.

Copying Practice Files

If an exercise instructs you to copy files from the practice folders to your desktop, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click My Documents.

  2. In the My Documents window, browse to the folder that contains the practice files for that exercise.

  3. Hold down the CTRL key, click each of the specified files until you’ve selected them all, and release the CTRL key.

  4. Press CTRL+C to copy the files to the clipboard.

  5. Right-click a blank spot on the taskbar, and click Show the Desktop.

  6. Press CTRL+V to paste the files to the desktop.

Using the Practice Files

Each exercise is preceded by a paragraph or paragraphs that list the files needed for that exercise and explain any preparation you need to take care of before you start working through the exercise, as shown here:

BE SURE TO log on to Windows and have an active Internet connection available before beginning this exercise.

OPEN Control Panel, and then display the User Accounts window.

The following table lists the folders that contain each chapter’s practice files.

Uninstalling the Practice Files

After you finish working through this book, you should uninstall the practice files to free up hard disk space.

Tip

If you saved any files outside the My DocumentsMicrosoft PressMicrosoft Windows XP SBS folder, they will not be deleted by the following uninstall process; you will have to manually delete them.

Follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

    Tip
  2. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then if necessary click Remove a Program.

  3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Windows XP Step by Step Second Edition and then click the Remove button.

  4. Click Yes when the confirmation dialog box appears.

  5. After the files are uninstalled, close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box and Control Panel.
