SCOPE AND APPROACH

Consider this your user’s guide to human performance technology (HPT), with tools and information systematically presented to explain the field of HPT and give you easy access. We share the best of our combined eighty-five-plus years of experience, showing you what works and why, and sometimes cautioning you about potential problems and how best to avoid them. We include lots of our successes and those of our colleagues and friends so that you can see how a model or tool can produce results.
We define terms as we use them and avoid acronyms wherever possible. We encourage you to talk with your clients using language that relates to the businesses they are in, rather than using the language of the performance improvement profession.
We suggest application exercises in several chapters to help you get to know specific models and tools we have found invaluable in our own work. And we include numerous resources to help you expand your professional library, find out more about a topic of interest, join a professional association, attend a developmental conference, and otherwise increase your expertise. Be sure to explore the Author’s Picks at the end of each chapter for our must-have resources.
In addition to the many models and tools we have mentioned here, we include a number of illustrations developed by co-author Lynn Kearny, who not only draws, but also writes and consults about improving performance in the workplace. Lynn’s illustrations clarify complex concepts, demystify intricate models, and are guaranteed to charm and delight you at the same time.
