CONCLUSION

The Individual Level is only one of three levels in an organizational performance system. It is often the place from which many performance consultants launch their careers. The prevailing action is an episodic approach to solving a performance issue. That is, some event in the organization triggers a request. Often, the request includes a proposed solution to the problem or opportunity. For example, if back injuries on the job are on the increase, the client may ask for a “safe lifting of heavy objects workshop.” Our approach is to take a look at what is going on first and to do a little analysis to diagnose the problem. We often find aspects of the same issue at the various organizational levels. For this reason, we favor an integrated approach to problem solving and maximizing opportunities in an organization. The tools and models we have presented here can be used both to discover the issues and to build performance systems; aids for the detective and the architect. In Chapter 3, The Work: Process/Practice Level, we explore the second organizational level.
