Using a studio to your benefit.

Q: I JUST SET UP A HOME STUDIO (GOOD SPACE) AND I MOSTLY SHOOT EDITORIAL PORTRAITS AND SOMETIMES PRODUCTS. NOW HOW CAN I USE “STUDIO” AND “STUDIO REPUTATION” TO MY BENEFIT? HOW CAN I KEEP MORE BELLS RINGING WITH IT?

A: Getting a studio isn’t one of those “if you build it, they will come” sort of things. You need to be out and about getting people interested in you and your work, whether you have a studio or not. No one is sitting around wishing they could just find a studio photographer. Know what I mean?

It’s you and your work that are going to get the bells ringing. If this was an offsite studio I’d say throw a party or host events, but if it’s in your home that might not be the best solution, unless it’s one of those studios built in a big barn in the backyard and you could have a bonfire/gallery opening sort of thing, something really unique. If it’s a 15x20 room in your house then it’s not going to be much of a big party.

Not saying that sucks. It’s just not a good option of “using the studio to keep bells ringing.”

A studio is a good place to work out of. Clients come to the studio first and then you head out on location or whatever it is you do. Having a consistent place to shoot is nice. You can let people know you have a studio but that isn’t going to be the main reason anyone hires you.
