Adding a filter in the dataset

You may want to filter your dataset by an attribute from another dimension, such as the Date dimension. The query designer provides the tools needed to slice and dice the data with multiple dimensions. We may not call the multidimensional model a "cube" if we cannot examine the data in different dimensions.

Let's filter the dataset by the sales amount in the year 2008 only. Normally, we want to test the most recent data but we're ok with the 2008 data for now.

  1. From the report designer, double-click on the dsSalesTerritory dataset.
  2. That displays the Dataset Properties dialog box. Click on the Query Designer button which will load the query designer dialog box.
  3. You can add a filter in two ways:
    • Expand the Date dimension. Then, expand the Calendar attribute. Select the Date.Calendar Year attribute hierarchy. Drag it to the filter pane.
    • On the filter pane, click on the first field under the Dimension column. Click on the down-arrow and select Date from the options. Select Date.Calendar Year on the Hierarchy column.
  4. Select Equal under Operator column.
  5. In the Filter Expression column, click on the down-arrow. Expand All Periods, and select CY 2008.

  6. Click on OK when done.
