Locate the button or lever and press or pull to
lower the feed dogs on your machine. This is a
crucial step in the free-motion technique.
With your machine set to a straight stitch, begin
sewing. The fabric will be free to move around to
create any random design you choose. Practice
this method to perfect it.

Free-Motion Quilting
Remove the current foot and stem with the tool
included with your machine. Loosen it just enough
to slide the entire piece out.
Place the new foot on the screw, and tighten it
to secure. Be sure to check the needle position; it
needs to line up with the hole in the foot. Referto
the specific instructions for your machine.
151Chapter 10: Decorative Techniques
Notice the feed dogs are in
the up position.
Free-motion quilting requires
a special foot called a
darning foot.
Use both hands to create
swirl-type movements.
The fabric won’t move
unless you guide it.
The feed dogs should be down
below the throat plate.
