The CORBA is a really old standard, designed to allow applications written in different programming languages to interact with each other. It is hard to use this standard because of all of the required plumbing code to achieve the goal. CORBA is not popular nowadays, but some legacy applications still use it to interact with old code, written mainly in Cobol, which was one of the preferred programming languages to write banking cores.
