Create a Publication

You can use Publisher to create all kinds of publications, such as brochures, flyers, newsletters, and letterheads. Publisher installs with a wide variety of publication types, including preset designs that control the layout and formatting of the publication. To start a new publication, simply select a design from Publisher's varied list of publication types.

How do I change the design of my publication?

You can click the Change Template button in the Format Publication pane to view other templates that you can apply to the publication. To change the color scheme, click the Color Schemes tab and select from a range of preset color schemes for the publication. If the task pane is not displayed, click the View menu and then click Task Pane.

What design options can I control in a publication?

Two of the most important design options that you can change to customize a publication are the color scheme and font scheme of the design. The color scheme controls the colors used throughout the design. You can select from a wide variety of preset color schemes to create just the look you want. You can use the font scheme to control the font sets used for all of the various text elements in a design template.

You can create a blank publication, populate it with your own text boxes, and design a layout to suit your project. For example, you might want to create your own brochure or invitation and customize it by adding your own text boxes and art objects.

Can I create my own templates in Publisher?

To turn any publication that you create into a template that you can reuse again, simply click File, and then click Save As. The Save As dialog box appears. Click the Save as type

How do I select another publication to create?

You can start a new Publisher publication at any time, even if you are currently working on an existing publication. To do so, click File, and then click New to return to Publisher's Welcome screen, where you can select a publication type and design. See the "Create a Publication" task to learn more.

Zoom In and Out

You can use the Zoom feature to control the magnification of your publication. By default, Publisher displays your document in a zoomed-out view so that you can see all of the elements on a page. When you begin working with the publication and add text and formatting, you can zoom in to better see what you are doing.

Add Text

When you create a new publication based on a design, Publisher inserts a layout for the text and displays placeholder text in the text boxes, also called objects or frames. The placeholder text gives you an idea of the text formatting that is applied by the design, and what sort of text you might place in the text box. You can replace the placeholder text with your own text.

You can add new text boxes to a publication and type your own text. For example, you may need to add a new text box to an empty area in your layout to include additional information, or you may need to add new text boxes to a blank publication.

You can add digital photographs or other picture files to your Publisher creations. For example, you might add a photo of your company's latest product to a new brochure, or include a snapshot of the new baby on a family e-mail newsletter.

You can illustrate a publication with artwork from Publisher's Clip Art collection. You can search for a specific type of clip art to suit your project needs. The Clip Art collection includes a wide variety of clip art images.

You can look for more clip art images on the Web. For example, you can click the Clip art on Office Online link at the bottom of the Clip Art pane to search the Microsoft Web site for clip art to suit your project. You can also find free clip art images on the Internet. Simply conduct a Web search for free clip art to find out what is available for downloading.
