Gathering Information

The grant writer acts as the pivot point between the funder and the program staff. You can’t do a good job of keeping the funder informed unless you know how programs are progressing. Attend meetings where program staff discuss programs. Ask questions. Attend program activities whenever possible. There’s nothing quite like firsthand experience of a project to make your next report or grant proposal take on a whole new personal tone.
You’ll also find it helpful to let program staff know what kinds of information you need to report to the funder. That way, they can gather the information you need as the project progresses, rather than trying to make it up at the end. The information you’ll need relates directly to the goals and objectives stated in the grant proposal.
