Volume Editor's Acknowledgments

My greatest thanks for completing this book go to Sangwon Park and Jihyang Choi, who provided outstanding research assistance. Sangwon and Jihyang kept track of chapters, helped with formatting, and communicated with authors during the early stages of the project. I owe special gratitude to Sharon Mazzarella and Vicki Mayer, editors of two other volumes in this series, for always being willing to consult on the questions and concerns that come up in a project of this size. Purnima Bose, Brenda Weber, Sara Friedman, Bonnie Brownlee, and David Weaver, my friends and colleagues at Indiana University, sustained me through their friendship, sense of humor, and supportive listening ears. I gratefully acknowledge Shannon Martin and the School of Journalism at Indiana University, Bloomington, for their splendid institutional encouragement and support. I thank series editor Angharad Valdivia – a mentor and a feminist colleague of many years – for inviting me to take on the editorship of this volume. I am indebted to the authors in this volume and to copyeditor Manuela Tecusan and project manager Brigitte Lee Messenger for their excellent and timely contributions.

My sister Nivedita Raju gave me many weeks of peace and quiet at her lovely home in Delhi, India, when I was reading and editing revised versions of chapters, and my little niece Ananya showed solidarity by sitting next to me and doing her homework so I would not be lonely. I was nourished throughout this project by Kevin Newsom's selfless love, generosity, and kindness. The wonderful legacy of my father, Professor E. G. Parameswaran, to his three children – a legacy of valuing collegiality and relationships and of building “ashrams” or academic communities – has inspired me as I navigated my way through this volume.
