How do I help a toddler sleep through the night?

Toddlers are active, curious beings who constantly want to explore—which can make getting them to fall asleep and stay asleep challenging.

Young children between the ages of 1 and 2 become more aware of their surroundings and want to discover all that the world has to offer them. This, along with constantly developing physical, cognitive, social, and motor skills, means that helping them sleep through the night can be tricky. Every child is unique, but following some key sleep-promoting strategies can help:

Consistency is key Regular bed and wake times will help your toddler’s body “know” when it’s time for sleep. A pleasurable but low-key set routine provides your child with a sense of predictability and security around bedtime.

Use a night light and timer This helps train your toddler’s brain to make the association—when the light goes off and it’s dark, it’s time to sleep. There is some evidence that a red light enhances sleep quality and improves alertness on waking.

Avoid late naps A toddler needs around five hours of wakefulness to build enough sleep pressure to be tired at night, so if bedtime is 7 p.m., try to ensure there are no more naps after 2 p.m.

Low stimulation Bedrooms are often full of toys, and the temptation to climb out of bed and play can be overwhelming. Put toys out of sight to create a distraction-free sleep environment.
