Do CBD products help with sleep?

In the last few years, there’s been a surge in cannabidiol (CBD) products that claim to cure insomnia—but evidence to support these claims is thin.

CBD is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis plant, but CBD has no psychoactive effects—you don’t feel intoxicated if you take it. CBD acts on the pleasure receptors in the brain known as the endocannabinoid system, and some research has found it encourages relaxation while lessening anxiety and pain. It’s important to note that the legal position of CBD is complex worldwide; some countries ban or limit its use altogether, so you need to know its status where you live or in any country you are traveling to.

SCAM OR SOLUTION?

Despite the reported benefits, there’s limited evidence to support the use of CBD products for sleep problems, and current research indicates that, while CBD may lessen some of the indirect causes of poor sleep (such as stress), it has no beneficial effect on the mechanics of sleep. It’s not yet clear whether the benefits that some users report are genuine or a result of the “placebo effect.”

It can also be difficult to be sure what’s really in many of the products claiming to contain CBD. In most countries, its manufacture is unregulated, which makes it difficult to ensure products are safe or doses are consistent.

Weighing up all these factors, it’s not recommended to take CBD for sleep problems. Getting to the crux of why you are not sleeping rather than masking any symptoms you may have is really the only surefire way to combat sleeplessness in the long term.
