Chapter 13. Shoot That Action

Al Green, 2007. Nikon D2X, 1/250 sec, f/3.5, ISO 1600, 200 mm

I usually hate it when artists wear sunglasses during the first three songs. The photo can be worthless if you can't see the expression in the eyes. Al Green, however, has so much expression on the rest of his face that I just had to approve this shot.

Tony Bennett, 2003. Fujifilm Finepix S2, 1/350 sec, f/4, ISO 1600, 120 mm

Even without too much facial expression, you can tell from this photo that Tony Bennett is fully into the music. He is squeezing out a high note with every bit of air that he has in his lungs.

Beth Hart, 2005. Fujifilm Finepix S2, 1/500 sec, f/4.5, ISO 800, 140 mm

Some expressions, poses, outfits, and instruments are totally related to a certain style of music. By looking at a photo you can immediately tell what music sounds like. Always try to capture that in your photos. In this shot, Beth Hart shows the ultimate rock 'n' roll pose.

Audioslave, 2002. Fujifilm Finepix S2, 1/750 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600, 135 mm

Another performer in this category is guitarist Tom Morello of Audioslave, jumping on stage with his guitar. The drummer in the background is included on purpose to emphasize depth and height.
