What Is a Side Note?

A Side Note is a miniature OneNote 2003 window that can be launched from the system tray (the area full of icons at the bottom right of your computer screen). When you install OneNote, an icon with a purple N is placed in your system tray. You can open a Side Note from the system tray icon, from within OneNote, or from a keyboard shortcut. We'll cover how to start a new Side Note later in this chapter.

The purpose of Side Notes is to allow you to take a quick note while you're working in other applications. You can leave a Side Note up on your screen all day long, and it will float above your other applications, as shown in Figure 8.1.

Figure 8.1. A Side Note can float over your other applications without getting in the way.

You can take as many Side Notes as you want from this one window.

tip

Side Notes can be helpful as you're working in other applications. For example, you can open a Side Note while browsing in Internet Explorer. Then copy and paste text from Internet Explorer into your Side Note as you work.
