CHAPTER 13
Compliance Within the Remote Access Domain

IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic shift toward employees working remotely. According to the Owl Labs survey taken in 2020, 80% of full-time workers expect to work from home at least three times per week. This is almost double the 44% rate from the same survey taken in 2018. While there have been benefits to both the employee and organization, it has come at a price. Many of these remote workers use their personal equipment. More data than ever are leaving the confines of the traditional office setting.

The proliferation of new equipment and pressure on deploying remote access capability has presented challenges for IT teams. They need to make sure that information that leaves the confines of the network is protected and personal devices are clear from malware and viruses. Whether it is personal devices or corporate devices, the organization needs to ensure security tools are installed, managed, and supported remotely.

An important first step to evaluating remote access security is to conduct an audit. This chapter will discuss the key elements you should include in a remote access security audit. This chapter will review those key elements for inclusion in such an audit.
