PART 2: Managing projects

A project is a great way to organise those tasks that are too large, too complex or just too different to be managed as part of your normal work. Project management is very versatile and can be applied to anything from endeavours taking a few days to major activities taking years.

This part considers selecting, scoping, planning, managing, delivering and benefiting from projects. It provides hints, tips and tools to deliver projects easily and successfully.

There are seven chapters in this section:

4 Project selection – choosing which projects to undertake and ensuring you are able to deliver them.

5 Project definition – defining a project in detail.

6 Project initiation – starting projects.

7 Controlling projects – managing projects during delivery.

8 Completing projects and implementing deliverables – finishing projects properly and comprehensively.

9 Learning from projects – learning from projects once they are complete.

10 Core project management tools and processes – tools that can be used throughout a project’s life.
