About the Authors

Heather Hattori became interested in chemistry her junior year in high school when a coach told her that drafting and architecture weren’t for girls. Luckily, her chemistry and physics teachers had no such misconceptions. While teaching high school, she completed her master’s degree in chemistry and biology and rediscovered her love for the outdoors. When not dreaming about working on a PhD or writing fiction, Heather crafts and volunteers in her community. Her parting words to you are “Practice, practice, practice so that you can follow your dreams — some things in life are necessary to learn even if you don’t think you’ll ever need them.”

Richard H. Langley grew up in southwestern Ohio. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and mineralogy and a master’s degree in chemistry. He next went to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he received his doctorate in chemistry. He took a postdoctoral position at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and then became a visiting assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls. He has taught at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, since 1982.

He is the author of 500 Physical Chemistry Questions and coauthor of numerous other books, including Chemistry for the Utterly Confused, Organic Chemistry II For Dummies, and Biochemistry For Dummies.

Dedication

From Rich: I would like to thank Adrienne Soliz for her friendship and support.

Authors’ Acknowledgments

From Heather: I would like to thank my parents and all the students I’ve ever taught before. Without life and the ability to test problems on students during 20 years of teaching, coming up with the fodder for this book would have been very unlikely. I would especially like to thank my very patient editors Chrissy Guthrie, Lindsey Lefevere, and Danielle Voirol at Wiley, who held it all together through a very long series of unfortunate incidents in my life that happened during the writing of this book. Thanks also to technical reviewers Lacey Moss and Jason Dunham for their careful review of the questions and solutions and to my agent Grace Freedson, who manages all the other important details in all of my “special projects.” And lastly, I want to thank my college general chemistry professor “Doc” Richard H. Langley and teaching mentor Dr. John T. Moore, without whom this book would not have been possible.

From Rich: I would like to thank Lindsay Lefevere, Danielle Voirol, and especially Chrissy Guthrie for their patience and help. In addition, I would like to thank Lacey Moss and Jason Dunham for their suggestions.
