This walk takes in the neighborhoods of Yanaka and Nezu. Along with Sendagi to the west, this area is known as Yanesen (a portmanteau of the three names). Having survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the fire bombings of World War II relatively unscathed, Yanesen is one of the best-preserved old quarters of Tokyo, and a walk here offers a chance to see a rare enclave of the old city. Highlights of Yanaka include the cemetery, a tranquil space full of mossy tombs, stone Buddha statues, and cherry trees where a number of famous literati, actors, and former Shoguns have been laid to rest. Nezu is another one of Tokyo’s Shitamachi (Low City) old town districts, whose narrow streets do not allow for heavy traffic and are ideal for walking. The most famous sight here is the Nezu Shrine, which has a long tunnel of torii gates that feels like the pathway to the spirit world.
