Tokyo is by far the biggest urban area in the world, but don’t feel daunted by the city’s size – exploring beyond the center poses few problems thanks to Tokyo’s superb transportation system, and it’s well worth heading off the beaten path to visit the outer-districts. Not only do they offer a breath of fresh air from the frenetic inner city, but each area is full of personality – whether it’s the pop culture hot spot of Ikebukuro, the sumo center of Ryogoku, or the hip and musical Shimokitazawa. Here, too, you’ll find some of the city’s most exciting modern developments, such as the vast fish market at Toyosu, and the futuristic, man-made island of Odaiba.
