The learning process in film direction is a continuing one and after thirty years in the business I realize I have learnt many things from many people, it is, of course, impossible to name, or even remember, all of them but I would like to record my gratitude to at least some of them.

Throughout this book the various persons involved are referred to as ‘he’. This is simply for convenience and is intended to avoid continually reiterating the awkward phrase ‘he or she’.
