Acknowledgements

I would like to acknowledge my wife, Kaluri Lavanya, originally Pragada Lavanya, without whose help I could not have written this book. She coped with my idiosyncrasies during this tortuous but pleasant journey. The seed of the book took shape when my daughter Kadambari was doing her BSEE project at home; I would like to thank her. My other daughter, Chinni (Soujanya), bought a Sony Vaio laptop with her own earnings for writing this book need to be acknowledged. And I would like to thank others in the family who supported me at a distance.

Oruganti Gopalakrishna fixed muhurtham for the start of writing. I thank my student Anurag for proof-reading and Rear Admiral Mohan, who gave the book a technical review as a finishing touch. The beginnings of the book go back to when Dr U. M. S. Murty of Agilent US asked me to give some lectures on digital signal processing for the people around him; I thank him for that. I acknowledge the encouragement of Professor Iyyanki Muralikrishna, Maganti Bhaskar Murty. And I thank Lieutenant-General V. J. Sundaram, with whom I have been associated for the past 30 years; he sent me to the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, so I could write this book. I thank Professor V. U. Reddy for his all-round help.

When I took my first job in the private sector, Mr Grandhi Mallikarjunarao let me buy 4TeX software and allowed me to pursue my work. I greatly acknowledge him for that. The main motivation came from the sales staff – I was trying to sell technology. I used to meet them and try to teach them over lunch or dinner, and sometimes in more formal sessions, as I travelled around. I have to acknowledge them for their drive. The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, let me stay on its campus and took me into its fold. The Electrical Engineering Faculty treated me like one of their own, especially the communications group. I give sincere thanks to the Electrical Engineering Faculty. I thank Professor Rajeev Sangal for a good understanding and I acknowledge the faculty of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, for their subtle help. My students Pallavi, Sirisha and Sai did a wonderful job and I thank Vivian Lee of CMU for a nice tennis photograph.

Many well-wishers in many forms have helped me and encouraged me in this professional and social cause.

Kaluri Venkata Rangarao
