Chapter 3, Media Relations, The Authors and J. Peter Donald

J. Peter Donald is a leading communication professional in New York City. Donald previously served as assistant police commissioner for the NYPD, overseeing public affairs. He advised the police commissioner and mayor on reputation and media during three terror attacks and following the appointment of a new commissioner. Donald was previously the top spokesman for the FBI in New York. Prior to the FBI, Donald worked at a public relations firm in Washington and for John McCain on his presidential campaign. He was selected for PRWeek’s 40 under 40 list and recognized by his alma mater Catholic University and Northfield Mount Hermon School. Donald penned an op-ed for the Huffington Post following the Boston Marathon bombing and for the New York Daily News on Senator McCain.

Chapter 4, Social Media, by Deirdre Breakenridge

Deirdre K. Breakenridge is CEO at Pure Performance Communications. As a 30-year veteran in PR, marketing and branding, she has worked with senior leaders and organizations, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, JVC, Kraft, Nasdaq, NBA Events & Attractions and PRSA. Breakenridge is a career-long storyteller and relationship agent, helping brands to get “unstuck” in their communications and creating opportunities that result in business impact. She is the author of six business books sharing stories about her communications journey. Her most recent book, Answers for Modern Communicators, was published by Routledge in October 2017. For 15 years, Breakenridge taught PR and social media courses, online and in the classroom, for NYU, UMASS at Amherst, Rutgers University and FDU. She speaks internationally on PR, marketing, branding and social media communications.

Jeff Grimshaw is a partner at MGStrategy and is an expert on accountability, alignment, and leadership effectiveness. Over two decades, he’s helped hundreds of executives deliver the results on which they’ve staked their reputations. His clients include senior leaders in dozens of Fortune 500 companies. Across engagements, she has built a consistent track record of helping clients address their immediate needs—while leaving behind stronger teams, greatly improved communication processes and increased leadership capability. She has a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a master’s degree in interpersonal communication, both with honors from the University of Texas at Austin.

Lynne Viscio is a principal at MGStrategy and consults with clients on organizational effectiveness, organizational design, internal communication strategy, and leadership development. Viscio brings focused problem-solving skills, facilitation expertise, and deep organizational experience to a broad range of situations and challenges. She works to drive business results by removing barriers, strengthening processes, and developing leaders and team members. Chapter 6, Government Relations, by Ed Ingle

Ed Ingle has 30 years of public affairs experience, most recently serving 16 years at Microsoft Corporation as general manager of Government Affairs. He previously served in The White House as deputy cabinet secretary for President George W. Bush. Ingle was a consultant for 12 years with the bipartisan Wexler & Walker government relations firm (owned by WPP plc), where he lobbied Congress and the Executive Branch on behalf of corporate clients. He also served in the Reagan White House Office of Management and Budget in the late 1980s. Ingle has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations from the University of Tennessee, and a master’s in public affairs from Indiana University.

Chapter 8, Investor Relations, by Eugene Donati

Eugene L. Donati is an assistant professor and director of the corporate communication program at Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. His research interests include the communication of financial information and the role of public relations in public policy formulation and political campaign management. He is also an adjunct professor at New York University, where he teaches investor relations. Donati is a graduate of the universities of Toronto and Pittsburgh and the American University, Washington. He began his 30-year public relations career as a press secretary on Capitol Hill and, later, was managing director at the consulting firm Clark & Weinstock, New York.

Chapter 9, Integrated Communication, by Tim McMahon

Tim P. McMahon, Ph.D., is a member of the full-time faculty at the Heider College of Business at Creighton University as well as a management consultant at McMahon Marketing LLC. He has been on the full-time faculty at New York University, St. Joseph University and Elon University. Previously, he headed corporate marketing and communication at ConAgra Foods Inc., then a Fortune 100 company. Before that, he founded and managed an award-winning advertising and public relations firm for 12 years. Also, he has headed national advertising for Pizza Hut Inc. and was the founding marketing director for Godfather’s Pizza Inc., then one of the country’s fastest-growing restaurant chains. He holds a Ph.D. from Gonzaga University, an MA from Seton Hall University and a B.A. from the University of Nebraska. He is an expert in a number of communication areas including organizational communication, integrated communication and social media.

Chapter 12, Corporate Responsibility, by Anthony P. Ewing

Anthony P. Ewing is a lawyer, consultant and teacher. As a senior advisor at Logos Consulting Group, Ewing counsels senior executives on corporate responsibility, crisis management and communication strategy. Ewing has helped companies to engage stakeholders, conduct due diligence, and implement policies and programs that effectively manage the risk of adverse human rights impacts. Ewing teaches a graduate seminar on corporate responsibility at Columbia Law School. His writing and research examines corporate human rights programs and corporate responsibility best practices. Ewing has served as an independent corporate responsibility expert for the International Labour Organization and is a cofounder of the Teaching Business and Human Rights Forum, a platform for collaboration among teachers worldwide. Ewing holds a BA in political science from Yale University and a law degree from Columbia University.

Chapter 13, Public Relations Consulting, by Louis Capozzi

Louis Capozzi is a teacher in the Master’s program in Strategic Communication at The University of Oregon. He has a broad background in corporate and marketing communications. He formerly served as chairman of the MSL Group, one of the world’s largest public relations firms managing operations in 30 cities around the world. Earlier he was chief communications officer at Aetna. Capozzi holds a BA from NYU in journalism and marketing, and an MBA in finance from Baruch. He is the author of two books on communication.

Roger Bolton is the current president and a past chair of Page, the premier global professional association for senior corporate communication executives. Previously, Bolton was senior vice president of communications at Aetna, where he led Aetna’s culture change initiative during a corporate turnaround. He was director of IBM’s global media relations and of communications for the IBM server and software groups. Prior to his business career, Bolton was assistant secretary of the Treasury for public affairs under President George H.W. Bush; assistant U.S. trade representative for public affairs under President Reagan; and special assistant to President Reagan in the White House, responsible for the president’s relations with business. He has received the Alexander Hamilton Medal from the Institute for Public Relations, the U.S. Treasury Distinguished Service Award and the John W. Hill Award for Lifetime Achievement from PRSA-NY.

Anthony P. Carter is the former chief diversity officer for Johnson & Johnson. He has had an extensive career in the public and private sectors. He served as vice president, Corporate Communications for Johnson & Johnson; senior director of Culture and Diversity and Corporate Communication for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company; assistant press secretary to NYC Mayor David N. Dinkins; director of Public Affairs for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission; and press secretary to Congressman Edolphus Towns of Brooklyn, New York. He is currently the president of the Board of Trustees of the Crossroads Theatre Company in New Jersey; member of the Board of Trustees of Fordham University; and member of the Board of Trustees of the United Way–USA. He has served as an adjunct professor at the School of Continuing & Professional Studies in the Public Affairs and Corporate Communication Graduate Program at New York University. He holds a BA degree in communications and journalism from Fordham University and received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Fordham University in 2017.

Dorie Clark is a professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and the author of Entrepreneurial You; Reinventing You; and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of 2015 by Inc. magazine. A former presidential campaign spokeswoman, the New York Times described her as an “expert at self-reinvention and helping others make changes in their lives.” A frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review, she consults and speaks for clients including Google, Microsoft and the World Bank. Simon Cole’s career in brand, advertising and communications consultancy has spanned nearly 30 years. Originally a mathematician, he has held senior positions in Saatchi & Saatchi, the brand consultancy Interbrand and corporate communications consultancy Financial Dynamics (now FTI). In 2009 he founded Reputation Dividend, the corporate reputation and branding consultancy specializing in applying quantitative analytics to reputation management (see www.reputationdividend.com). His working life has taken in many of the disciplines of the communications industry and he has advised many of the world’s largest and best-known brand owners. He has both published and spoken widely on the management and economics of brands and branding.

Josephine S. Cooper is CEO of Josephine Cooper LLC, a public affairs consulting firm that provides crisis management, public policy and communication services to companies, associations and individuals. Prior to founding the firm in 2011, Cooper served for seven years as group vice president for Public Policy and Government/Industry Affairs for Toyota North America, and previously as CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. She also held leadership positions in other prominent trade associations, worked on Capitol Hill for then-Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and then-Representative Dick Cheney, and held senior positions at the U.S. EPA. Cooper has a BA in business and economics from Meredith College and an MBA from Duke University.

Bob DeFillippo is a senior strategic communications counselor with Zito Partners and teaches graduate courses in strategic communications, crisis communications, and critical business skills at NYU. DeFillippo served as the CCO for Prudential Financial, retiring in 2015. He has also served as the director of Public Affairs for AARP in Washington, D.C., and was press secretary to N.Y. Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr. Prior to that, he was a reporter and editor for newspapers in New York’s Hudson Valley. DeFillippo has served on the boards of several media and professional organizations, including the Page Society, PRSA Foundation, the National Press Foundation and WBGO Public Radio.

Richard Edelman is the CEO of Edelman, a global communications firm. The firm was named “PR Agency of the Decade” by both Advertising Age and The Holmes Report. Edelman has extensive experience in marketing and reputation management, having led assignments with major corporations, NGOs and family businesses in over 25 industries around the world. In 2019, Edelman was named the PR Agency Professional of the Past 20 Years by PRWeek and was inducted into the publication’s Hall of Fame. He is regarded as an industry thought leader and has posted weekly to his blog since 2004. Edelman earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1978 and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College in 1976.

John Frazier is a senior associate with CommCore Strategy, a leading strategic message development and media training consultancy. With a special strength in travel and tourism, he is a four-time Adrian “Best of Show” winner for outstanding travel PR program worldwide from Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (2000, 2005, 2006 and 2013). His award-winning destination work has included programs for South African Tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Setouchi Travel Authority (Japan), the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, the Finger Lakes Tourism Council, Visit Forth Worth, the Connecticut Office of Tourism and Tourism Queensland. He has worked with virtually every major hotel flag, including Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott and InterContinental, as well as significant regional operators like Aqua-Aston and Charlestowne. He has handled numerous airlines including El Al Israel Airways, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Hawaiian Airlines. Frazier also has experience with other aspects of the travel and leisure sector, including restaurants, spas, attractions, cruise lines, tour operators and travel technology providers. Prior to CommCore, he served as Chief strategy officer for Quinn PR and cofounder/president of PT&Co. (an off-shoot of Chiat/Day advertising) both in New York.

Jennifer Hauser is an executive vice president at Edelman. Through her 23-year career in the public relations industry, she’s worked with leading global brands and organizations across multiple sectors including health, food/nutrition and consumer goods, and technology. She actively represents clients including Merck Consumer Healthcare, Glaxo SmithKline, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, The Dannon Company, Microsoft and the American Heart Association. Hauser is also on the faculty at New York University in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies. Prior to joining Edelman, she owned a public relations agency she started in 1993. She sold her agency in 2002 to Havas/Euro RSCG Magnet.

Holly Helstrom is an associate at Logos Consulting Group and fellow at the Logos Institute for Crisis Management and Executive Leadership. She advises clients across many industries on effective leadership and crisis response. Helstrom is the firm’s lead researcher, developing case studies that bring to life the principles of effective crisis response. She also has expertise in conceptualizing, creating and implementing crisis simulation scenarios tailored to challenge and strengthen clients’ crisis evaluation and response skills. She is a member of the faculty at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science where she teaches courses on online reputation management for professionals.

Denise Hill, Ph.D., APR, is an assistant professor of strategic communications at Elon University’s School of Communications. Hill has more than 30 years of corporate communications and public relations agency experience. She was previously vice president of corporate communications and public relations at Delhaize America. She also held chief communication officer positions at Quest Diagnostics and a business unit of Wyndham Worldwide. In addition, she served as a vice president of communication at Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Cigna. Hill is a member of the board of directors of the Public Relations Society of America, a member of the Arthur W. Page Society and serves on APCO Worldwide’s International Advisory Council. She holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in communications from Temple University, and a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Martin Hirsch is founder and president of MDH Communications LLC, a New York-based consultancy he started after a 35-year international career at Roche, the Swiss healthcare company. While at Roche, he project-managed the highly regarded book Good Chemistry: The Life and Legacy of Valium Inventor Leo Sternbach, published by McGraw Hill. More recently he was a creative contributor to the memoir Chasing the Invisible: A Doctor’s Quest to Abolish the Last Unseen Cancer Cell, by Thomas Grogan, published by Koehler Books. He also serves as a faculty adviser at New York University, and posts articles regularly on various social media. He won the American Society of Journalists and Authors 2018 Writing Award for Best Personal Story Blog. He has a BA in communications and an MJ in journalism from Temple University.

Kevin Kolevar is vice president of Global Government Affairs for Dow leading federal, state and international government affairs and managing legislative, regulatory, and political affairs. Before joining Dow he was a founder and managing director at ClearView Energy Partners, an energy research, analysis and consulting firm that helps clients capitalize on energy sector changes through analysis of economic fundamentals, operational realities and politics. Prior to ClearView he served as assistant secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability at the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as serving as the chief of staff to the Deputy Secretary of Energy. Kolevar has a BA in political science from the University of Michigan.

Bob Kula is vice president of Corporate Communication at Kiewit Corporation and leads the company’s public affairs, corporate foundation and charitable giving, employee communications, digital media, and marketing services functions, working closely with more than 20,000 employees to manage the company’s corporate reputation globally. He is responsible for how Kiewit uses communication to protect and build its brand and deliver on core operational and financial objectives. This includes maximizing the company’s internal and external communication processes, including media relations, crisis and issue management, government and community affairs, sponsorships, online and social media management and employee communication. Kiewit is a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest and most respected construction and engineering organizations in North America.

Satoki Kurokawa is as an associate senior administrator for the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) System Project Team of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). SSA is devoted to protecting astronauts and satellites from collisions with space debris–one of the biggest issues in space exploration. Previously, Satoki was a deputy manager for the Public Affairs Department of JAXA, responsible for PR projects on rockets, satellites and manned space programs, including the International Space Station (ISS). He collected millions of names and messages from across the world, including from Buzz Aldrin, to help reverse the decline in public support after a failed rocket launch. Satoki earned his master’s degree from New York University. Sandra Macleod is CEO of Echo Research and director of Reputation Dividend and has provided evidence-based counsel and worked to build the professionalism of communications and reputation management for over 25 years. She is one of the founders of the International Association of Measurement and Evaluation Companies (AMEC), a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Management, a member of the McKinsey Women as Leaders’ Forum and is cited as among the “100 most influential people in PR” by PRWeek. From an early career at Edelman Public Relations in London and Information et Enterprise in Paris, Macleod went on to become head of communications at PA Management Consultants before setting up the first international franchise for media analysis company, CARMA International, in 1989. Ten years later, she founded Echo Research as a full-service research firm with offices in London and New York, and winners of a record-breaking 90 industry awards for innovation and excellence in research. Macleod was recipient of the 2018 Page Distinguished Services Award.

Grace Leong is the CEO and partner of Hunter, a leading marketing communications practice with offices in New York City, Toronto and London, and talent across North America. For the past 30 years, Leong has built her career and public relations agency by providing strategic marketing communications counsel to national consumer brand teams and CMO’s within Fortune 100 companies such as Kraft Foods, Mondelez, Johnson & Johnson, Post Foods, Campbell’s and 3M. Leong began her public relations career at D-A-Y/Ogilvy & Mather Public Relations, a top 20 public relations firm. A year later, Leong joined forces with Barbara Hunter to establish Hunter Public Relations.

Nitin Mantri is group CEO of Avian WE (including Chase India) since 2006. As a 20-plus-year veteran in PR, he has worked with leading brands in diverse sectors and is known for his ability to mitigate crisis and train the C-suite in managing the media. Mantri cofounded Chase India, now a subsidiary of Avian WE, in 2011 to work on public policy mandate for Indian and multinational companies. Before joining Avian WE, he held senior positions at Brodeur/Pleon (now Ketchum) in the U.K. As president of International Communications Consultancy (ICCO) and Public Relations Consultants Association of India (PRCAI), he takes a keen interest in the development of the PR industry. He regularly speaks on PR, marketing, branding and reputation management at the AMEC Global Summit, ICCO Global Summit and Sabre Awards. He teaches and charts course syllabi at prominent mass communication colleges in India to increase awareness about the profession at the grassroots level.

Kathryn Metcalfe is a seasoned communication professional who has held multiple leadership positions at major corporations and top agencies. She is currently the chief communications officer of CVS Health. Before joining CVS Health, Metcalfe led integration communications for Aetna, which was acquired by CVS Health in an industry-transforming deal completed in late 2018. Previously, Metcalfe was chief communications officer of Deloitte LLP, one of the largest professional services organizations in the United States. Metcalfe also served as vice president at Pfizer Inc. and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Cheryl Overton is a creative instigator with a passion for brands, an instinct for insights, a commitment to inclusivity, and a knack for integrating digital solutions that leverage culture to drive awareness and fandom. She has 20-plus years of agency and entrepreneurial experience leading campaigns for some of the world’s most compelling corporations and brands including Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, Unilever, American Express, Johnson & Johnson, Target and the American Heart Association. She serves as president of Egami Group, an award-winning, multicultural integrated marketing and communications agency. There, she oversees day-to-day operations, organizational development and partners closely with teams on developing client strategies. Prior to Egami, Cheryl held leadership roles at Zeno Group, PMK|BNC, UniWorld Group, Ogilvy PR and Edelman, providing senior strategy, creative, business development and relationship management for clients targeting consumer, professional, influencer and multicultural audiences.

Wylie Rogers is president and CEO of The Tantalus Group (www.thetantalusgroup.com), a global management consultancy. He has more than 20 years of experience in politics, media, business and consulting and works with many of the world’s biggest B2B and consumer goods companies in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America. He specializes in working with the C-suite, and develops bespoke leadership programs, reputation management initiatives, company narratives and business improvement processes. Before founding The Tantalus Group, Rogers was based in Hong Kong as head of public affairs for BASF in Asia Pacific, overseeing 15 countries in the region. He was also based in Beijing and Shanghai as head of marketing and communications for ABB China, and previously worked as head of content for the ABB Group in Zurich, Switzerland.

Kim Sample focuses on helping the PR Council’s 100-plus member agencies thrive and elevating the PR profession overall. Prior to joining the PRC in August 2018, Sample was the founder/CEO of Emanate, a $35 million, 100-plus person international marketing communications agency. During her tenure Emanate was named PRWeek Agency of the Year and CRAIN’s Best Places to Work in NYC, and the team’s work for clients was recognized with numerous industry awards. Sample also worked at Ketchum, Marina Maher Communications and Golin earlier in her career, and has served Fortune 500 clients across a number of industries, including financial services, travel and hospitality, consumer packaged goods (CPG), and consumer electronics.

Claude Singer, Ph.D., is a brand strategist known for his creative flair in brand positioning, naming and narratives. He held senior positions at New York-based agencies Siegel+Gale and Lippincott, and now serves clients as managing partner of the independent consultancy, Brandsinger. Singer began his career writing speeches for the chairman of Chase. He did stints as vice president of corporate communications at Chemical Bank and Aetna. Today, the Brandsinger partnership maintains a robust consulting practice in higher education, cyber security, healthcare and professional services, among other sectors. Singer is a talented teacher. Out of graduate school he taught history at Boise State, then graduate courses in business writing and brand strategy at University of Hartford. Recently he was adjunct faculty at NYU and John Jay College of Criminal Justice teaching strategic communication. Singer has a B.A. from Reed College and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington.

Bill Squadron, J.D., is an attorney, an assistant professor of sport management at Elon University and an executive for more than 20 years in the sports industry. He was cofounder and CEO of Sportvision, which introduced Emmy-winning technology innovations such as the yellow first-down line and the K-Zone, and was named Ernst & Young NYC Entrepreneur of the Year for the media category. He also served as president of Bloomberg Sports, which created groundbreaking sports analytics products and as special counsel to Genius Sports, a global leader in sports betting data and services. He received his B.A. in English literature from Swarthmore College and his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
