Part 2 describes the digital system engendered by the invention of the microprocessor; namely, the microcomputer. Two exemplars have been chosen to represent this category – the Apple II and the IBM Personal Computer (PC). The latter’s successive motherboard architectures are described in detail. Two components are studied in depth: one hardware component – the chipset, and one type of firmware – the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).
