User security

Before we can let Linda use the report, we need to give her permission to run the report. Security can be set at any level, including the report itself. The security will be inherited from the previous level unless it is overwritten. There are various levels of security that can be given to an individual or a group.

Here's how we'll set Linda's security; we are going to give her permission to access the Finance folder only, and all the reports within.

User security

To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Open up the Finance folder.
  2. Select the toolbar item called Folder Settings.
  3. Select the Security menu item on the left-hand side.
  4. Click on the toolbar item called Edit Item Security.

You'll be shown a message box asking if this is what you really want to do. It is asking if you want the security for this folder to be different from the security of the parent folder. You can revert to the parent folder security at any time. To do so, perform the following steps:

User security
  1. Click on the OK button.
  2. Click on the toolbar item called New Role Assignment.
  3. Set the Group or user name property to YourDomainLinda_Diaz. Replace YourDomain with the domain that you are working in.
  4. Select the Browser checkbox. This will allow her to see the folder and reports, but she will not be able to modify anything.
  5. Click on the OK button.

Linda can now use the link http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx?ItemPath=%2fFinance&ViewMode=List to access the Finance report folder.
