A photo is created by light—sunlight, for example, or the light of a lamp. Any object that receives light also gives off light. This is called reflection. Light-colored things, like a white T-shirt, reflect much more light than dark-colored things, like a pure black cat. Reflected light can be absorbed and saved. This is how we create exact copies of the people or things we photograph. Everything we capture appears as it did in the exact moment the light was absorbed and saved. The copy of the absorbed light is called the captured image, and the machine we use to capture the light is called a camera.
