Reference
A single verb can be followed by dierent particles or prepositions, which
can change the meaning of the verb. In each of these sentences, “break”
carries a sense of separation or damage, but the particles change the
meaning into something dierent each time.
Maria and Pablo ended their relationship.
My car stopped working.
Ted became very emotional and started to cry.
The handle separated from the vase.
A thief entered my house illegally.
Gustav escaped from prison.
“Break into” and “break out of”
have opposite meanings.
