End-of-life planning

Another consideration when designing an IoT device is what happens when that device is no longer being manufactured? Many IoT companies will simply stop supporting their old devices after a while, and these devices then become useless. This is because they often require connecting to a central server to function, and once this central server goes offline, they literally cannot function.

There is an alternative. When designing an IoT device, it is possible to make it function in a reduced capacity even without internet connectivity. For example, it is possible to design a smart thermostat to continue working as a manual thermostat even when it cannot establish a connection to its central server.

When designing your IoT device, please take into consideration if you can keep it useful even after your company discontinues support for it. In some cases, this isn't possible, but in many cases, it appears that companies purposely limit their devices only to spite their customers. Don't be like those companies.
