THE HIP
DESIGNED BY
DAVID STONE MARTIN
When I first flicked through The Hip by Roy Carr, as a student, I was introduced to the wonderful work of David Stone Martin. It’s graphic, yet painterly; humorous, but not daft. And it oozed music—the music of improvisation. It seemed his brush and pen could work wonders with simplicity. He could tell a story with the bare minimum. I then picked up a few of his actual covers—this one included. It’s beautiful, for a beautiful man. Two colors say it all. I like to think DSM could draw absolutely anything, and only he could get away with drawing Pres as this mysterious caped crusader.
