Step-by-Step Setup

Although FTP can be a simple service, it can be complex in certain environments. The following general steps highlight the steps that can be required to set up a secured FTP site:

  1. Create Windows 2000 user accounts for nonanonymous users who will access the FTP site.

  2. Create the physical directory for the FTP site on the local computer.

  3. Configure NTFS permissions on the physical directory.

  4. Create the new FTP site by using the Microsoft Management Console.

  5. Modify the security accounts and other configuration information, if desired.

  6. Start the FTP service for the new site.

This chapter primarily focused on step five, configuring the FTP site. For more information on configuring and integrating security, refer to Chapter 3 "Integrating IIS with Windows 2000 Security," and Chapter 4, "IIS Security." For more information on some of the general service information discussed here, such as accounts and directories, see Chapter 5 "Customizing WWW Sites." If you are looking for a detailed discussion of the entire setup process, I recommend the online help. As with any technical topic, however, the best education is experience, so just create an FTP site and work with it.
