The work of developing engineering technologies and products can be a fascinating and creative pursuit. Anyone who has contributed to a successful product or installation will come across reminders of it over a significant period of time during its everyday operation. If he or she is lucky, the same product may then become a collector's piece and enjoy further, almost never‐ending, popularity. The trials of bringing it to fruition will then be long forgotten.

At that point, it is worth reflecting on what lay behind that success. Thoughts will turn to particular individuals who had the vision and tenacity to make things happen. Hopefully, what they actually did will have been some of the suggestions made in this book.
