Take Ownership

A special permission granted to a user that allows that user to control permissions on an object and assign other users permissions for the object. The Take Ownership permission is included by default with Full Control permissions and can be assigned through special permissions.

Task Manager

A GUI-based tool that can assist a user or administrator in troubleshooting and managing applications on the computer. You can access this tool by right-clicking an empty area of the Taskbar and then choosing Task Manager.

T Carrier Level 1 (T-1)

A dedicated line that can carry 1.544Mbps in 24 separate 64Kbps channels.

T Carrier Level 3 (T-3)

A dedicated line that can carry about 43Mbps on 672 separate 64Kbps channels.

TCP

The connection-oriented protocol that works at the Transport layer (Layer 4) of the OSI model, providing the guaranteed mechanism for delivery in the TCP/IP protocol suite.

Telnet

A virtual terminal protocol used for remote control of servers and clients. Telnet is not considered a secure protocol.

text editor

A tool such as Notepad or Wordpad that an administrator can use to view, change, and create text-based files.

time to live

A mechanism built into each packet in a network that limits the number of hops the packet can take through routers before the packet is discarded from the network.

tone generator

A device used to determine connectivity of wires that run through obstructions. The device sends a signal through a wire that can be located by its companion device, referred to as a tone locator. The pair is also often referred to as the "fox and hound."

traceroute

A network utility that can be used with a variety of clients to determine the route the packets must take between a source host and a destination host by manipulating the TTL of the echo request packets sent.

tracert

A network utility specific to Microsoft clients and servers that determines the route packets must take from a source host to a destination host by manipulating the TTL of the echo request packets sent.

transceiver

A term that stands for transmitter/receiver, which is the role of any device that receives data, converts it, and then sends it to another entity.

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

A suite of protocols that represent the most prevalent communication standard used for network communication on today's networks, including the Internet.

Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)

A connectionless protocol that is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. TFTP provides for the fast transfer of files but does not guarantee the file transfer with acknowledgments. It should only be used when the transfer can be guaranteed by another application.

trunks

Connections that carry all VLAN traffic when a VLAN spans more than one switch.
