4.11. Answers to Review Questions

  1. B. The tracert tool is used on Microsoft networks to isolate a network problem to a specific router. The ping utility is used to establish connectivity, but it does not isolate the problem. Both netstat and nbtstat are used to control network caches and gather information and statistics about the network.

  2. A. The nslookup tool can be used in interactive and noninteractive mode. The other network tools do not have two modes of operation.

  3. A, D. A lit link LED on a device is an indicator that the device is physically connected to another device through the network. It also indicates that the cable being used is configured properly for at least the power and ground wires. This usually, but not always, means that the cable is properly made to transmit data. A lit link LED does not indicate that IP addresses are properly configured between the two computers.

  4. C. Server Message Block (SMB) is the file service that Windows clients use. FAT and NTFS are filesystems, not file services. NFS is the file service used by Novell for NetWare services and Novell clients.

  5. C, D. A printer pool is made up of a single printer connected to multiple print devices. The printer sends the print job to the first available print device. The print devices should at least use the same driver and, when possible, they should be identical.

  6. B, C. Client Services for NetWare (CSNW) enables Microsoft clients to connect to NetWare servers. It is installed with the NWLink protocol. Directory Services Manager for NetWare (DSMN) enables Microsoft servers to see NDS servers as they do Active Directory domain controllers. File and Print Services for NetWare (FPNW) allows Novell clients to connect to Microsoft servers. Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare (GSNW) is installed on Microsoft servers to provide a connection through the Microsoft server to the NetWare servers for all clients who have been given permission.

  7. A, C. DNS and WINS provide name resolution for a network. To be specific, DNS resolves hostnames to IP addresses whereas WINS resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses. DHCP services assign IP addresses and other server addresses, but they do not provide name resolution. Firewalls filter traffic between networks, but they do not provide name resolution.

  8. A. A bus topology uses terminators to prevent signal bounce. Terminators are not used in the other network topologies.

  9. B. A wireless infrastructure is typically connected to a wired infrastructure at some point and therefore has all of the same potential problems as a wired infrastructure, and then some.

  10. B, C. The steps in an effective troubleshooting policy are designed to isolate a specific problem, provide a solution, and then document the solution. They are as follows:

    1. Identify the symptoms and potential causes.

    2. Identify the affected area.

    3. Establish what has changed.

    4. Select the most probable cause.

    5. Implement an action plan and solution, including potential effects.

    6. Test the result.

    7. Identify the results and effects of the solution.

    8. Document the solution and process.

Although restarting the affected computer might prove useful at times, it is not always a step in the troubleshooting strategy.

  11. C. The ping tool is most commonly used to confirm connectivity between two devices on a TCP/IP network. The ipconfig tool is used to determine the IP address and other IP information about a local host. The nslookup tool is used to test and confirm hostname resolution between clients and servers. The netstat tool is used to view active and listening ports on a local host.

  12. A. After a successful ping, you can use the arp-a command at the command prompt to view the physical (MAC) address of the remote host. The nslookup tool is used to test and confirm hostname resolution between clients and servers. The tracert utility is used to view the hops that a packet takes between the source and the destination address. The netstat tool is used to view the active and listening ports of a local host computer.

  13. D. The ifconfig commandline tool can be used on Unix and Linux systems to configure inter-faces and to view information about configured interfaces. The ipconfig commandline tool is used with the latest Microsoft operating systems. The winipcfg GUI tool is used with Windows 9x clients. The nbtstat tool is used to view NetBIOS over TCP/IP statistics for Microsoft clients.

  14. A. The newest versions of Server Message Block (SMB) that support digital signing between computers, instead of just using a NetBIOS name, are also referred to as Common Internet File System (CIFS).

  15. A. The service that gives an SMB functionality to Linux clients and makes Windows shares to Linux clients is referred to as Samba. NTFS is a secure filesystem used by Windows. Active Directory is the directory information system used by Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. NFS is the original file-sharing system used by Linux clients and servers.
