About the Author

Michelle Segar is a behavioral sustainability and motivation scientist and Director of the University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy (SHARP) Center. She also chairs the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan’s Communications Committee, advising the Plan on new strategies for the American public and policy makers. Her comprehensive training includes a Ph.D. in Psychology and master’s degrees in Health Behavior/Health Education (MPH) and Kinesiology (MS) from the University of Michigan. Dr. Segar not only researches the science behind sustainable behavior change, she has learned first-hand how to put these theories to work, in real life, through her two decades of one-on-one health and well-being coaching with individuals.

Dr. Segar’s broad base of experience has given her a unique 360-degree view of the most critical health issue facing our society: the failure to achieve widespread adoption of health-promoting and disease-management behaviors. Her approach to fitness, self-care, and health has gained the attention of both the media and influential members of the health field. Dr. Segar advises global organizations on the next-generation of communication strategies, counseling protocols, patient-centered systems, and app development to foster the engagement, commitment, and consistent decision making that underlie a lifetime of fitness, meaning, well-being, and health. She also delivers sustainable behavior change trainings to health professionals worldwide. Her ideas have generated accolades from such prestigious organizations as the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, and the North American Menopause Society, among others.
