Leader Development Checklist

This checklist keeps us on track as we develop emerging leaders. When you develop a leader at any level, remember to:

1. Model Dynamic Leadership.

2. Commit completely to the development of your emerging leaders.

3. Have and clearly communicate your personal leadership philosophy.

4. Keep the vision of the future current and inspiring.

5. Acknowledge displays of leadership.

6. Draw out emerging leader’s point of view.

7. Be trustworthy, and increase trust.

8. Act with integrity.

9. Consistently act from pro-social values, especially when it is most difficult. Expect the same of others.

10. Recognize courage, and provide feedback if it is lacking.

11. Make it safe for emerging leaders to address issues and share ideas.

12. Ask for feedback regarding your performance.

13. Speak up when you suspect an emerging leader is holding back.

14. Listen.

15. Treat an emerging leader as a peer.

16. Encourage an emerging leader to take on projects that expand potential.

17. Support an emerging leader’s decisions.

18. Stand back and let emerging leaders act autonomously when appropriate.

19. Give tough feedback when needed with emphasis on what you want over what you don’t want.

20. Put your own ego on hold. Remain authentically humble.

21. Celebrate emerging leaders’ successes with the same enthusiasm that you celebrate your own.

22. Allow yourself to be influenced by your emerging leaders.

23. Trade your own use of power for influence.

24. Have fun.
