SAFETY

Wood burning is a very safe hobby, but there are some safety guidelines and things you can do to ensure it is safe for both you and those around you.

Do not leave a hot tool unattended; always turn off AND unplug the wood-burning tool when you are finished working. Always assume a wood burning tool is hot and treat it with respect. Never touch the metal parts that get hot.

Work on a clean, cleared off, and hard surface like a desk or table.

Work in a well-ventilated space. Use fans and/or fume extractors to pull the smoke away from you while you work. I also like to use an air purifier for extra security. (Position the fan right next to or over the project and facing away from you, so the smoke will be pulled away from your work area.)

Check the toxicity of the wood you will be using prior to burning a new piece and follow suggested guidelines. I use wood-database.com for my wood research needs.

Make sure the wood you choose is dried, sanded smooth, and not chemically treated or finished (meaning no stains or other finishes). It is very important to work on raw wood.

ALWAYS wear a mask with a rating P-95 or higher when burning. I suggest the RZ Mask 2.5M and the 3M P100 Particulate Mask. If you have long hair, always tie it up to keep it out of the way when burning.

Avoid getting smoke in your face by working with your head tilted to the side of the wood you are burning, not directly above it. Using a fan and goggles or safety glasses helps keep smoke out of your face and eyes.

Use a set of pliers and a ceramic dish for removal of hot tips. This will allow you to safely switch, remove, and temporarily discard hot tips.

Make sure you have a solid docking station to set the burner on while it’s hot, ensuring it doesn’t move around; tape your docking station to the desk if necessary.

Teach children about safety when your wood burning tool is in use, and never leave children unattended around your workstation.

Always follow all safety precautions set by the wood burning tool manufacturer. Read the directions thoroughly before use.

Have fun! Relax, and enjoy the process. Wood burning really is a fabulous and safe hobby.
