7.1. Introduction

A large amount of the data that is interchanged between applications originates from relational databases and is finally stored again in relational databases. Since much of the interchange is expected to use XML as the transport format, relational database systems have been extended with XML capabilities. This chapter presents the XML support in Microsoft's SQL Server 2000 database system including the functionality provided by the SQLXML Web releases (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/sqlxml). This chapter is based on earlier publications, such as (Rys 2001).
