Appendix E. Glossary

Throughout this glossary, terms being defined occur in bold italic; if the definition requires context, the context is in upright bold.

The glossary is arranged by topic, not just alphabetically. This is so that the glossary can be read as a quick refresher on the various topics, and so that when you are reading one definition the definitions of related terms are close at hand. Accordingly, the definitions may not read exactly the same as those found in the text itself; it each case, the context of the definition was considered. Selected terms that are used only occasionally in this book but may be common elsewhere are included, but the bold definienda of their definitions are grey instead of black.

At the end is a concise alphabetic index for the reader who is not sure of the topic under which a particular term will be found.
