Boy Scouts of America, 1325 W. Walnut Hill Ln., P.O. Box 152079, Irving TX 75015-2079. Website: scoutingmagazine.org. Estab. 1913. Circ. 1 million. Magazine published 6 times/year covering Scouting activities for adult leaders of the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Venturing. “We use about 4-6 cartoons in each issue. They are normally one-panel, although we occasionally use a one-column vertical three-panel. Humor should be seen through the eyes of adults who are similar to our readers: volunteer leaders and/or parents of Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts. Avoid stereotypes such as dumb housewives, buxom blondes, lady drivers, lazy or dim-witted husbands, as well as common ethnic stereotypes. And especially avoid the stereotype of the fat Scoutmaster leading a brood of young Scouts through the woods. We emphasize more the self-reliance of the Scout and his patrol. Cartoons can feature uniformed Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts, but please be sure that you (1) know what the current uniform looks like, and (2) are familiar with the Scouting program. No smoking, hunting, or cruelty. New settings and situations are appreciated, as we get tired of deserted islands or thirsty men crawling through the desert.”

CARTOONS “Size: 8×10 or 5×7. Paper: White, any weight you are comfortable with. Finish: If you send pencil roughs and we like the idea, you will be contacted to do a finish. However, we prefer finished art in case we want to use a cartoon immediately. Rates: We pay $75 per cartoon for first rights.” Pays on acceptance.

MARKETS

BOOK PUBLISHERS

Walk into any bookstore and start counting the number of images you see on books and calendars. The illustrations you see on covers and within the pages of books are, for the most part, created by freelance artists. Publishers rarely have enough artists on staff to generate such a vast array of styles. If you like to read and work creatively to solve problems, the world of book publishing could be a great market for you.

The artwork appearing on a book cover must grab readers’ attention and make them want to pick up the book. It must show at a glance what type of book it is and who it is meant to appeal to. In addition, the cover has to include basic information such as title, the author’s name, the publisher’s name, blurbs, and price.

Most assignments for freelance work are for jackets/covers. The illustration on the cover, combined with typography and the layout choices of the designer, announce to the prospective readers the style and content of a book. Suspenseful spy novels tend to feature stark, dramatic lettering and symbolic covers. Fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as murder mysteries and historical fiction, might show a scene from the story on their covers. Visit a bookstore and then decide which kinds of books interest you and would be best for your illustration style.

Book interiors are also important. The page layouts and illustrations direct readers through the text and complement the story, particularly in children’s books and textbooks. Many publishing companies hire freelance designers with computer skills to design interiors on a contract basis. Look within each listing for the subheading Book Design to find the number of jobs assigned each year and how much is paid per project.

Publishing Terms to Know

• Mass market paperbacks are sold at supermarkets, newsstands, drugstores, etc. They include romance novels, diet books, mysteries, and novels by popular authors such as Stephen King.

• Trade books are the hardcovers and paperbacks found only in bookstores and libraries. The paperbacks are larger than those on the mass market racks, and are printed on higher-quality paper and often feature matte-paper jackets.

• Textbooks contain plenty of illustrations, photographs, and charts to explain their subjects.

• Small press books are produced by small, independent publishers. Many are literary or scholarly in theme and often feature fine art on their covers.

• Backlist titles or reprints refer to publishers’ titles from past seasons that continue to sell year after year. These books are often updated and republished with freshly designed covers to keep them up to date and attractive to readers.

Finding your best markets

The first paragraph of each listing describes the types of books each publisher specializes in. You should submit only to publishers who specialize in the types of books you want to illustrate or design. There’s no use submitting to a publisher of literary fiction if you want to illustrate children’s picture books.

The publishers in this section are just the tip of the iceberg. You can find additional publishers by visiting bookstores and libraries and looking at covers and interior art. When you find covers you admire, write down the name of the books’ publishers in a notebook. If the publisher is not listed in Artist’s & Graphic Designer’s Market, go to your public library and ask to look at a copy of Literary Market Place, also called LMP, published annually by Information Today, Inc. The cost of this large directory is prohibitive to most freelancers, but you should become familiar with it if you plan to work in the book publishing industry. Though it won’t tell you how to submit to each publisher, it does give art directors’ names. Also be sure to visit publishers’ websites—many offer artist’s guidelines.

How to submit

Send one to five nonreturnable samples along with a brief letter. Never send originals. Most art directors prefer samples that can fit in file drawers. Bulky submissions are considered a nuisance. After sending your initial introductory mailing, you should follow up with postcard samples every few months to keep your name in front of art directors. If you want to e-mail TIFF or JPEG files, check the publishers’ preferences to see if they will accept submissions via e-mail.

HELPFUL RESOURCES

If you decide to focus on book publishing, become familiar with Publishers Weekly, the trade magazine of the industry. Its website, www.publishersweekly.com, will keep you abreast of new imprints, tell you which publishers plan to increase their title selection, and give you the names of new art directors. You should also look for articles on book illustration and design in HOW (www.howdesign.com), PRINT (www.printmag.com) and other graphic design magazines. Helpful books include By Its Cover: Modern American Book Cover Design (Princeton Architectural Press), Front Cover: Great Book Jacket and Cover Design (Mitchell Beazley), and Jackets Required: An Illustrated History of American Book Jacket Design, 1920–1950 (Chronicle Books).

Getting paid

Payment for design and illustration varies depending on the size of the publisher, the type of project, and the rights purchased. Most publishers pay on a per-project basis, although some publishers of highly illustrated books (such as children’s books) pay an advance plus royalties. Small, independent presses may pay only in copies.

Children’s book illustration

Working in children’s books requires a specific set of skills. You must be able to draw the same characters in a variety of poses and situations. Many publishers are expanding their product lines to include multimedia projects. While a number of children’s book publishers are listed in this book, Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market, published by Writer’s Digest Books, is an invaluable resource if you enter this field. Visit www.writersdigestshop.com to order the most recent edition. You may also want to consider joining the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (www.scbwi.org), an international organization that offers support, information, networking opportunities, and conferences.

“Antarctic Press is among the top 10 publishers of comics in the United States. However, the difference in market shares between the top five publishers and the next five publishers is dramatic. Most of the publishers ranked above us have a far greater share of the market place. That being the case, we are an independent publisher with a small staff, and many of our employees have multiple responsibilities. Bigger companies would spread these responsibilities out among a larger staff. Additionally, we don’t have the same financial power as a larger company. We cannot afford to pay high page rates; instead, we work on an advance and royalty system which is determined by sales or potential sales of a particular book. We pride ourselves on being a company that gives new talent a chance to get published and take a shot at comic stardom.”
