Typical end to a programme

Capgen over VT

In this example the promos are out of vision (OOV), and consist of a capgen over a VT background. This is also a common technique, having a long tape of a moving background which is appropriate for the programme, and placing large captions over the top of it.

Credit rollers

The only thing that really matters here is that you know exactly how long it takes for the credits to run through. You may need to finish them before a final caption appears (often a production company credit). Once credit rollers have started there is usually little you can do to speed them up.

Changing credits

Static credits are prepared on separate pages of the caption generator. This has the advantage that you can speed them up by changing pages more quickly. Again, be aware how long ideally you want them to run, and the minimum duration you need.

Crash credits

Used at the end of live programmes instead of a full credit sequence when the programme has overrun. This will often be just one page (presenter, producer, director) used over very short closing music.

Long tails for presentation

When you finish a programme, leave the last picture or caption up for a long time. If presentation are having any problems with their machines this looks a lot better than pictures going to tape shash. Do not let any sound leave the studio for at least a minute, in case this has been ‘dribbled over’ by presentation. (This is a technique that prevents reverb from being cut off too quickly at the end of a programme, but leaves your studio sound ‘live to air’ for longer.)

Count to off air

The production assistant will be counting the programme off air, and should also give a special count down to the point where the pre-fade roll closing titles need to be rolled. They will also normally be liaising with presentation, making sure they are aware that the programme is about to end.
