Long, slim pots or fabric bags fit snugly
onto a windowsill and look attractive
with woven willow surrounds. Fill them
with potting soil to about
1
/2 in (1 cm)
below the rim and make drills

/4 in (

deep and 2 in (5 cm) apart.
RAISING LETTUCES
ON A WINDOWSILL
For fresh salad leaves on hand whenever you need
them, sow cut-and-come-again lettuces on a kitchen
windowsill. Loose-leaf lettuces can be sown thickly,
the baby leaves cut, and stumps allowed to regrow.
YOU WILL NEED
loose-leaf lettuce seeds
multi-purpose potting soil
long, slim pots or fabric bags
woven willow surrounds
pencil or dibble
watering can with fine spray nozzle

LETTUCES THAT NEED
MORE SPACE
Butterhead, romaine, and
crisphead lettuces develop dense
central hearts of leaves. Sow seed
in trays and plant out seedlings
8–12 in (20–30 cm) apart.

Keep the potting soil moist and
when the seedlings are 24 in
(5–10 cm) in height, cut them as
required, about 1 in (2.5 cm) above
soil level. The plants should then
sprout new leaves, which can be
harvested about two weeks later.
2
Pour seed into the palm of your hand
and sprinkle it into each drill using your
thumb and forefinger. Cover seeds lightly
with potting soil and water using a can with a
ne spray nozzle to avoid disturbing the seeds.
Lettuces can
be cut to the
stump to
regrow two
or three times
