Introduction

We already discussed how an employee’s engagement experience varies depending on his step in the Engagement “I” Path as well as on his Career “I” Path. Throughout these chapters we described typical employee behaviors and introduced a series of “manager’s dos and don’ts” after our discussion of each step or stage. The last two chapters of the book will help you to reflect on what you have learned and discovered about employee engagement and to delineate your action plan for the future. In chapter 9, we guide you to think about your role as a model for your employees’ engagement and to ponder on how you are living up to standards. After all, “engagement is all about the I” and your efforts will have a higher payoff when you are consistent in what you say and what you do. We also suggest what you can do to be a more effective role model. In chapter 10, the last chapter of this book, we take you through a process that you can use to turn your new ideas about how you as a manager can foster employee engagement into concrete actions for the benefit of your employees, your company, and you. Everything will make more sense and you will be ready to take action after cutting through the noise.
