Implementing Infrastructure Services

Implement your infrastructure services before implementing basic services and value-added services, both of which depend on the infrastructure.

Tip

Start with a generic or basic configuration for the infrastructure services. Do not impose complex policies or sophisticated customizing during the initial implementation process. After you fully test the basic configuration, optimize components one at a time. Note that changes must be done one at a time, and each revision must be fully tested and documented for change management.

To implement infrastructure services:

1.
Install the hardware rack.

2.
Ensure that the power supply is available from two or more power distribution units (PDUs), and that the environment has adequate air ventilation and temperature control.

Note

Power, air, and space are part of Internet data center (IDC) design and are beyond the scope of this book. For purposes of implementation, we assume these design issues are already taken care of. Before proceeding with implementation, ensure that these items are in place and meet the specifications required for your design.

3.
Gather all your supporting documentation:

a. Use the overall network design diagram (developed in Chapter 5) to identify and implement each design element and network component.

b. Use the IP address schema (developed in Chapter 5) to configure the addresses for network design.

c. Develop or obtain security policies for use later.

4.
Implement network components in the following order:

a. Implement console servers.

b. Install and configure routers.

c. Install and configure switches.

d. Install and configure network access servers (NASs).

e. Install and configure load balancers.

f. Install and configure firewalls.

g. Install and configure intrusion detection systems (IDSs).

5.
Implement domain name system (DNS) servers.

6.
Implement lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) servers.

7.
Implement remote access dial-in user service (RADIUS) servers.

8.
Implement dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) servers.

9.
Implement network time protocol (NTP) servers.

10.
Install enterprise servers, operating environment, and data storage equipment.

11.
Implement backup and management servers.
