Appendix B
Who checks which quality characteristics?

Writers have responsibility for checking all of the items that affect the quality of technical information. Technical editors have a similar responsibility except that they usually are not responsible for verifying the accuracy of the information. Peer editors (or copy editors in some situations) typically edit near the end of the development cycle; they need to check certain aspects of all of the quality characteristics.

The more limited responsibility of technical reviewers (people skilled in the content of the information) spans several quality characteristics—mainly accuracy, completeness, concreteness, and visual effectiveness. Sometimes technical reviewers are asked to check certain aspects of clarity, organization, and retrievability.

During usability testing, users (or people similar to users) provide information that mainly affects task orientation but also parts of all the other quality characteristics.

The work of testers mainly affects accuracy and concreteness.

In addition to checking all aspects of visual effectiveness, visual designers need to check certain aspects of clarity, concreteness, style, and retrievability.
