Chapter 2. OTHER SEARCH ENGINES

Most of the time when you hear about a search engine in the news, you're hearing about Google. Sometimes a story will mention Yahoo or another search engine, but most of the time it's about Google.

Because it's been that way for a few years now, it's easy to assume that it'll always be that way: that Google will be on top, and that all other search engines will be unnecessary. Google's a great search engine to be sure, but there are always other contenders. Until there's one search engine that indexes every page on the Web, offers every conceivable search syntax, and makes everybody on the Web happy, there will always be contention for the position of #1 search engine.
