Just because the Internet is worldwide doesn't mean that you can't get local resources. From a zip code to a country, there are plenty of places on the Internet that provide information on local businesses, events, and government resources. In this chapter we're going to focus on government resources, but we'll also focus on useful nongovernment sites.
The smallest potential unit of an area would be, I suppose, a house, street, or neighborhood. And while I'm sure that there are plenty of neighborhood (or even street!) Web sites out there, they're not common enough (yet) to devote a section to. So let's start with zip codes.
